10 Gourmet Activities To Do with Kids Over March Break

While the kids are off, it’s time to plan a handful of fun activities. Here, we’re offering you several entertaining (and gourmet!) ideas to try at home using what you have on hand—think modelling clay made with pantry items and flavoured popcorn for movie nights. Happy March break!

1. Prepare themed dinners inspired by different countries

On Monday, fly to Mexico, on Tuesday, take off for Italy and on Wednesday, pack your bags for India. Sounds too good to be true? Maybe, but by preparing dinners inspired by traditional dishes from different countries, you can travel in the comfort of your own dining room. You can even ask the kiddos to draw the featured country’s flag or craft decorations for the table.

2. Organize a cookie-decorating contest

Get out your piping bags, small candies and colourful icing for a contest to make the most original cookie. You can also have fun with cookie cutters to vary the shapes. And of course, the parents have to taste the cookies to determine the winner!

3. Eat a pajama breakfast for dinner

Did your teens wake up well after noon? Take advantage of staying in your pajamas all day, relax, and why not eat eggs, pancakes and other breakfast dishes for dinner? It’s easy to prepare and lets you stretch the sleep-in...until the evening.

4. Make flavoured popcorn and snacks for a movie afternoon

With so many online platform options, the video store era is long gone, but on the plus side, we’ve gained the option to watch a phenomenal number of films at the touch of a button. Before starting your movie marathon, prepare flavoured popcorn (BBQ, caramel or even ketchup!) and homemade treats to nibble on. Happy viewing!

5. Make modelling clay with pantry ingredients

It only takes five ingredients (flour, salt, cream of tartar, water, dye) and 10 minutes for children to have fun with playdough for hours. The dough can be coloured with food colouring and will keep for a few weeks.

6. Picnic in the living room

We take out the checkered tablecloth, a wicker basket and sandwiches to recreate a picnic while waiting for summer. The best part? You’ll never forget anything at home and you don’t have to worry that the mayo is hot.

7. Make an ice cream sundae bar for dessert

On the kitchen counter, set up different flavours of ice cream, candy, chocolate chips, caramel, crushed peanuts and maraschino cherries so that everyone can prepare a sundae to their liking. And why not make homemade ice cream too while you’re at it?

8. Design your own RICARDO magazine

For a day, let the kids become chefs, photographers and printers to recreate a recipe magazine. Get them to write the recipe, prepare it and photograph it before printing everything and pasting it on paper.

9. Open a restaurant for an evening

Create menus with one or two dish options per serving and play the waiter. Kids will love choosing what to eat for dinner. Tip not included.

10. Eat an “upside down” dinner

A dinner that starts with a slice of cake and ends with soup? We shake up the typical order of courses for a dinner that promises to be entertaining. In addition, it ensures that everyone is still hungry for dessert.
