- Place the flour in a shallow plate and the breadcrumbs in another.
- In a bowl, beat the egg.
- Dredge the cheese sticks in the flour. Dip in the egg, then coat with the breadcrumbs. If desired, put the sticks in the freezer for 30 minutes for easier handling during cooking.
- In a large skillet, fry the cheese sticks in the oil.
- Serve hot or warm as a starter.
If you don’t have breadcrumbs, crumble about 20 saltine crackers in a blender or place them in a plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin. You will get about 125 ml (1/2 cup) of breadcrumbs. Flavour with 5 ml (1 teaspoon) dried basil, to taste. You can use leftover bread in the same way.
