Ingredients
Preparation
- Place the rack in the middle position.
- Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F).
- In an ovenproof saucepan, bring the maple syrup to a boil.
- Place the apples upright in the pan and bake for 15 minutes. Flip the apples upside down and continue baking for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, blend the maple sugar, flour, butter, oats and salt until crumbly.
- Remove the apples from the oven and place in a 20-cm (8-inch) baking dish. Cover with the topping mixture. Bake for an additional 15 minutes.
- Over medium heat, reduce the apple cooking syrup by two thirds for a nice sauce.
- At service, drizzle the sauce over the hot apple and serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
Note
If you prefer apples that remain slightly firm after cooking, choose a Royal Gala or Fuji variety. My children preferred the dessert when the apples had slightly collapsed, which felt more like an apple crisp. In this case, opt for a Cortland apple.
