How to Make Your Potted Herbs Last

Love having a few of your favourite potted herbs on hand by the window sill? Be it basil, chives or parsley, it is so convenient to snip a few leaves as you cook your favourite recipe. Here are a few tips to ensure your herbs stay fresh and alive for as long as possible.

How to pot your herbs

Put each plastic pot (with drainage holes) of herbs in a slightly larger, non-perforated pot containing a bit of water and leave it on your kitchen counter. The plant’s soil will stay nice and moist and help those herbs go the distance.

Change the water

How often do you need to change the water? Ideally, every day. However, you can test the soil in the pot to see if it’s still hydrated or if it needs more water. If your herbs are starting to droop, stick a finger an inch or two into the soil. If you feel that it’s dry, it’s time to change the water!

Provide enough sunlight

When it comes to keeping your indoor herbs healthy, you’ll need more than just water. Sunlight is also key, although it might be hard for herbs to get the required six hours of natural light when inside. So be sure to keep them by a window in the kitchen (but do not expose them to direct sunlight); this will help them thrive and remain flavourful.
