How to Keep Coffee Fresh

There’s nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee in the morning. But coffee’s taste hinges on its freshness. How do you ensure your recently purchased ground coffee or coffee beans maintain their optimal level of freshness? Here are a few tips on how to do it.

Coffee has three known enemies: air, light and humidity. Exposure to these three elements can negatively affect coffee’s flavour. This applies for both ground coffee and coffee beans. So how do you keep your coffee flavourful and fresh for longer? Follow these three pieces of advice:

1. Avoid air exposure

Do so by storing coffee in an airtight container. The original packaging is an option too, but only if it’s well sealed.

2. Avoid light exposure

This requires storing coffee in a dark place, such as the pantry. Also, if storing in a container, an opaque one is preferable to a clear one, as the latter can let light in.

3. Avoid humidity exposure

Always store coffee at room temperature. Coffee also can’t handle changes in temperature well, so avoid the fridge or freezer.
