Why strawberries spoil quickly
Berries can only be kept in the fridge for up to six days before they begin to spoil. The reason is excess water; berries contain lots of it, and it also doesn’t help when we wash our fruit prior to putting it away.
How to store them
A glass airtight container is the ideal storage vessel for strawberries, and Mason jars in particular are ideal for extending strawberries’ lifespan by a few more days. This is because the jar’s screw-on lids are great at forming an airtight seal, minimizing air exposure and protecting the fruit from external humidity. Here’s how to preserve them:
- Toss out any strawberries that have gone mushy or mouldy;
- Place unwashed berries in the jar (if any are a little moist, be sure to pat them dry with a paper towel);
- Ensure the berries are loosely packed in the jar to keep them from being crushed;
- Place the flat metal lid on the jar and then screw the metal ring until airtight, and pop it in the fridge.
