Wash, peel, core and coarsely chop the pears. Place in a saucepan. With a masher or wooden spoon, mash the pears to extract some juice. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the pears are tender. Stir occasionally. In a food processor or blender, purée the pears until smooth. If desired, pass the purée through a fine sieve, pressing the mixture with the back of a spoon.
