Breaded Tofu
- In a bowl, combine 125 ml (½ cup) of the flour with the water and spices. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
- Sprinkle the remaining flour (60 ml / ¼ cup) on the tofu slices and shake to remove any excess. Coat the tofu in the spicy batter. Set aside.
- In a large non-stick skillet, heat the oil. Brown the tofu slices for 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until crisp. Add oil, if needed. Drain on paper towel.
Hamburgers
- In the same skillet or in a hot oven, brown the cut side of the buns.
- Spread the inside of the buns with mayonnaise and mustard. Layer with a slice of cheese and tofu. Garnish with the tomato, lettuce, and avocado slices. Cover with the top buns.
Note
In our test kitchen, we substituted chicken cutlets for the tofu and the result was excellent.
