Le Premier Word

  • Preparation 5 MIN
  • Servings 1
This play on the classic Last Word cocktail (gin, Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, fresh lime juice) is a tribute to Montreal—and Canada. I used a local British-style gin, local apple cider and the French herbal liqueur, Chartreuse. The final touch of Scotch is a nod to the country’s Celtic side and adds wonderful depth. –Kate Boushel, bartender, Atwater Cocktail Club, Montreal

  1. In a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice, combine the gin, the Chartreuse and the lemon juice. Shake vigorously.
  2. Strain into a coupe glass.
  3. Top with the hard sparkling cider.
  4. With an atomizer, spray with a smoky Scotch whisky (try a medium-peat 12-year-old single malt) or rinse the glass with a bar spoon full of Scotch first, if desired.
  5. Garnish with a long lemon zest.
