Crab Chowder in a Sourdough Bread Bowl

  • 1 carrot, peeled and diced
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) butter
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) flour
  • 2 cups (500 ml) chicken broth
  • 2 cups (500 ml) milk
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and diced (500 ml/2 cups)
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 3/4 lb (375 g) fresh crab meat
  • 4 slices bacon, cut crosswise into small pieces
  • 4 small round loaves sourdough
  • Other bread (about 15 cm/6 inches across)
  • Salt and pepper
