1. Make a sandwich
Here’s a recipe that’s nothing like a hot dog even though it requires the bun. This nod to the Cubano sandwich only takes 15 minutes, without any waste!

2. Fresh breadcrumbs
Bread takes an interesting turn in the form of fresh breadcrumbs given that it can add volume to a dish. Coarsely blend it in the food processor and then use it as a coating for meat, such as in this pork tonkatsu recipe.

• Of all the kinds of foods that are thrown out each year, the bread and pastry category represents 9% (in terms of weight.)
• 750,000 breads are wasted every day in Canada.
3. Soup’s on!
Hot dog buns are great for thickening soups. A few pieces added to a soup add a lovely texture. This is the case for Italian soups like ribollita and pappa al pomodoro, where bread plays a large role in the broth. They’re so hearty that a spoon can even stay upright in the pot!

4. Make a savoury crumble
Crumbles are great for sprinkling over a plate of pasta, so why not make some with hot dog buns? After you’ve blended them to a crumb consistency, toast them in a pan with a good amount of oil, garlic and a few herbs. Then add it as a final, crunchy touch to a dish.
In any case, to keep from having more hot dog buns than you actually need, avoid food waste by:
- buying only the quantities you require;
- properly storing the bread in an airtight bag and in a cool place;
- freezing leftover buns to have them ready for your next barbecue!
