6 Healthy Snacks for All Ages

The munchies can take hold of you at any time, even during back-to-school season! So, when your stomach is grumbling and the treats in the pantry are calling out to you, it’s great to have more nutritious options. Here are 6 healthy snacks with a fruit complement that boosts their textures and flavours.

1. Chewy Dark Chocolate Granola Bars

To counter a drop of energy between two meals or after exercising, it’s always good to keep some homemade granola bars on hand. Made with nuts and seeds bonded by a purée of dried apricots, this version is perfect to keep in your lunchbox. It also has the advantage of getting better with time, becoming even chewier after a few days.

The Fruity Complement: The purée of dried apricots acts as a bonding agent. With the generous amount of grains in our chewy dark chocolate granola bars, it helps to tie everything together. The taste of apricot is subtle and doesn’t overshadow the other ingredients, while still bringing a lovely underlying sweetness to the bars.

2. Tahini Prune and Dark Chocolate Truffles

Need a little treat to help your youngest wait patiently for dinner and allow you to keep your sanity in the middle of the afternoon? These mouth-watering chocolate truffles are made with sesame butter, or tahini, which gives them a beautifully creamy texture. A coating of toasted sesame seeds makes them taste slightly roasted. A real delight to treat yourself to at snack time.

The Fruity Complement: Prunes are often forgotten in cooking because of their reputation as a granny remedy. But their delicate flavour makes them an ideal neutral base to give a velvety texture to chocolate, as in our truffles.

3. 3 Banana Ice Cream Flavours

After a good meal, before settling down with your homework or for an evening of television, make this dessert. It’s a perfect substitute for ice cream and a different way of eating fruit. Ripe bananas, frozen and crushed, take the spotlight in this ultra-smooth snack that contains no dairy products. Vanilla, chocolate-hazelnut or mango: You just need to choose your favourite flavour!

The Fruity Complement: Naturally very sweet, bananas are the stars in several desserts and require few seasonings to be highlighted. In this recipe, the ice cream must be eaten immediately to enjoy its gorgeous supple texture. To keep the bananas ice cold all the way to your bowl, remove the peel before freezing them.

4. Apple Cookies

Great to nibble on with a good cup of coffee, cookies make the ideal morning snack. This version is rich in fibre, thanks to the addition of wheat bran and rye flour. The light and moist texture of these cookies is reminiscent of that of muffin tops—our favourite part of the muffin! The recipe is simple and can easily be doubled so you can stock up in the freezer.

The Fruity Complement: In our cookies, apple is used two ways: diced and as applesauce. The applesauce softens the dough and creates humidity, which allows the cookies to remain moist for a longer time. It can even replace butter in some recipes. As for the diced apples, they’ll create mini explosions of sweetness in your mouth.

5. Date and Cashew Energy Balls

To give yourself a little energy boost in the middle of the day or after running, these date and cashew energy balls are perfect to help you continue with your day’s activities. They’re easy to make, combining only four ingredients, including hemp seeds that bring some crunchiness as well as a good source of omega-3 and omega-6.

The Fruity Complement: Puréed dates are being used more and more as a sweetener in desserts. They can be used to replace or reduce the amount of refined sugar in some recipes. Plus, their stickiness makes them an ideal bonding agent.

6. Mango and Cantaloupe Smoothie

There’s nothing better than a vitamin-packed smoothie to get you pumped before a day at the office or at school. This version combines the sunny flavours of mango, cantaloupe and orange, and almonds add some protein.

The Fruity Complement: To create original smoothies, all you need to do is come up with great pairs of ingredients. Mango and cantaloupe are perfect examples of that. While mango brings sweetness, cantaloupe, which can be a little bland off season, gives an aromatic, floral element to the mango.
